Dean Soule was born and raised in the historic town of Concord, Massachusetts. Dean was a man of many talents and accomplishments. The son of Mildred Soule, a renowned local artist, and Royden Soule, a gentleman farmer and GM employee, Dean's roots were firmly planted in the rich soil of New England. His childhood was filled with unique experiences, from growing up amidst his mother's beautiful artwork to caring for two pet raccoons on the family farm which connected to Walden Pond by a walk through the forest.

Dean's athletic prowess was evident early on. As a high school track star, he set the stage for his future achievements. His speed was unmatched at Brown University, where he briefly held the world record for the 100-yard dash.

His love for nature led him to work as a Maine Guide in his youth, honing his expertise in Earth Science. This passion for the outdoors and education brought him to Seattle in 1961, where he began a distinguished teaching career at Lakeside High School. There, he pioneered the wilderness program and taught physics, biology, and earth science. He also coached track, led camping trips, and even drove the school bus. Some of his athletes went on to compete in the Olympics.

Dean's legacy lives on through his family: his wife Marcia Soule; his son Steffan Soule and daughter-in-law Barbara Halliday; his daughter Kristin Soule Engstrom, son-in-law Kelly Engstrom, and grandchildren Kaci and Karson Engstrom; as well as Judy O'Malley, his first wife and mother of his children.

As an educator, Dean was more than just a teacher; he was a mentor who imparted valuable life skills to his students. From setting up a wilderness camp and building fires to cooking in the wild and leaving campsites cleaner than they were found, Dean taught not just science but stewardship. He also developed a unique method of positive thinking combined with sensation learning for self-improvement.

Known for his friendliness, helpfulness, kindness, and generosity, Dean passed away peacefully on September 21st, 2023. His life was filled with love from his family and dedicated caregivers. His memory will continue to inspire all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
