Douglas Dale Smith, age 86, passed away on April 26, 2025 at Evergreen Hospice Care
Center in Kirkland. He died from cancer, 3 months after being diagnosed.
"Doug" was born in Helena Montana on January 21, 1939 to parents Dale Smith and
Ruth Umbreit. The family moved to south Seattle after the war, when Doug was 6.
Doug was responsible and reliable, a hard worker all his life, always financially supporting his family.
In high school, he took his first job cleaning a butcher shop on the Seattle waterfront,
and was eventually promoted to cutting and preparing meats for wealthy clients and
five star restaurants in the Seattle area.
In 1966, he became a longshoremen and joined the ILWU Local #19 - working his way
up from a casual dock worker to crane operator. He eventually retired after working on
the waterfront for 37 fulfilling years - and moved to Federal Way, Washington.
Doug is survived by his wife Louise; his daughter Becky; and five grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother Melvin Smith; daughter Linda; and son Ron.
