Greg Duane
Masten
Sep 4, 1955 — Mar 25, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Gregory "Greg" Masten, a father, husband, brother, and friend. After seven years of battling multiple myeloma, he was freed from suffering and called home on March 25, 2026.
Greg was born September 4, 1955, in Tumwater, WA to George and Lois Masten. Greg graduated from Tumwater High School in 1973 and spent some time in community college before working odd jobs around the Puget Sound. Throughout his early 20s, he was often seen as the life of the party, making many friends and enjoying the wilder things life had to offer. Greg eventually began working for the Washington State Dept. of Transportation as a construction engineer. Through this work, he became known as, what many fondly referred to him, a "hard ass." No one could get past his wit and borderline annoying stubbornness, often referring to "The Book of Masten" in work debates. On many occasions, he could be heard suggesting someone reference "Mr. Webster" in an argument, pulling out the dictionary to prove a point. Even with this unique attitude, he gained respect from his peers and eventually gave the WSDOT over 30 years of service. He retired in 2011, then worked for O'Neill Service Group until officially retiring in 2025.
Outside of work, Greg was a simple and straightforward family man. He had two children with his first wife Carrie: a son, Gregory, and his daughter, Kacie. He grew his family after connecting with his second wife Candy in 2001, becoming the stepfather to daughters Brittany and Jordyn. If not helping his kids, you could find him working on his next big build in the backyard, renovating various portions of the house, or watching poker matches on tv. While enjoying most of his time at home with family, he spent many weekends visiting his parents and siblings in Tumwater or spending a few hours at the casino, one of his favorite places. Above all, Greg was unique and impressionable. All who knew him could quote some of his hard-worn sayings. A few of his favorites were, "I'll be dipped in shit" and "such is life." No one in Greg's life could escape unscathed from a heated argument about trivial things, often getting so frustrated by Greg's persistence in being right. If there is one way Greg lived, it was stubborn. It made him who he was and the person everyone loved.
Greg is preceded in death by his parents George and Lois Masten, his father-in-law Ronald Cunningham, his brothers-in-law Al Parce and Jason Cunningham, and his son Gregory Masten. He is survived by his wife Candy Masten, daughter Kacie (Kevin) Masten-Le, stepdaughters Brittany Vereecken and Jordyn (Cody) Vigoren, siblings Kris Parce and Gary Masten, best friend Lyle Unwin, and numerous others who will miss Greg's unique charm. The family asks that you find time this week to play a game of cribbage, throw a few dollars in a slot machine, or help yourself to a jar of Costco chocolate covered raisins. Those were Greg's favorite things.
