Lindsay Suzanne Gilbreath passed peacefully in her sleep surrounded by family on August 16, 2024 after a 3 year battle with esophageal cancer. Lindsay was born in Seattle, Washington on March 23, 1950, one of three siblings, to parents Lois and James Gilbreath. When she was age 3 the family moved briefly to Oregon, then on to Santa Monica and onto Canoga Park for several years. Susie, as she was known to the family, was talkative, friendly, and outgoing from a young age. The family joked that she was talking long before she was walking. She liked nothing better than meeting the neighbors and inviting them home to meet her mommy, some becoming good family friends. Susie made friends with the neighbor with the swimming pool, who often let the family enjoy their pool. In 1957 the family moved back to Washington state and went to live at Lake Roesiger, where grandparents Frank and Agnes Monsen owned and operated a resort. Lindsay attended school in Snohomish, graduating from Snohomish High School in 1968. She enjoyed her school friends during the school year, and her lake friends during the summers, spent swimming, waterskiing, and having fun at Lake Roesiger. After high school, Lindsay got her A.A. degree from Everett Community College. She then moved to Oahu, where she found the Hawaiian lifestyle a fun change from the long rainy winters in the Pacific Northwest. When she returned to Washington, she got her bachelors degree at Evergreen State College then completed a masters program at Western Washington University. Her career included several years supporting adults with disabilities initially as a counselor and then in the development and management of a greenhouse business that employed adults with disabilities. She cultivated and nurtured her lifelong motto of "all things flower" and also found her dearest lifelong friendships there. Lindsay began her next career at Stanwood high school where she was a vocational counselor helping students find their career paths. This passion took her around the state to learn about the university and technical programs offered in our area. She transitioned to Lincoln Hill High school for the remainder of her career where she retired in 2014. After retiring she enjoyed traveling, cooking, seeing family at Lake Roesiger and working in her garden as well as spending time with her friends and family, usually enjoying tacos or seafood. Lindsay is survived by her husband William Varley and his extended family, sister Leslie DeNike and family, brother Chris Gilbreath and family, her daughter Brianna, son in law Ryan and grandchildren Nora and Leo. Lindsay was predeceased by her son Jesse Torgerson who passed in 2023. On behalf of Lindsay's family we thank you for all the support and condolences since her passing.
