It is with deep sadness and immense love that we announce the passing of María Leonor Ascencio, our cherished sister, aunt, friend, and the steadfast matriarch of our family. María was more than a guiding presence—she was the pillar on which generations leaned, the architect of our family's future, and the source of the strength that carried us through every triumph and hardship.

Born in El Salvador, María carried the heart of her homeland in everything she did. With unwavering courage and determination, she helped her family immigrate from El Salvador to Los Angeles, California, where she devoted many years to building a new foundation for future generations. Later in life, she made another brave transition, moving to the Seattle area, where she continued to nurture her family and build community with the same warmth and generosity that had always defined her.

As the matriarch, María devoted her life to uplifting her loved ones. Through her sacrifices, foresight, and perseverance, she helped her family find opportunities, stability, and success in a new country. She led with steady love, quiet resilience, and a deep sense of responsibility. Her hands shaped all of our paths, and her strength held the family together through every challenge.

Eleven years ago, she suffered the heartbreaking loss of her beloved son, Edwin, a grief she carried with remarkable grace. Even in sorrow, she remained the center of gravity for the family, continuing to unite, guide, and support each of us with the same enduring love that defined her entire life.

María found joy in life's simple pleasures: the soft rhythm of her sewing machine, cheering faithfully for the Los Angeles Lakers, the excitement of trying her luck at slot machines, and the deep pride she felt watching her nieces and nephews grow. Every success, every milestone, every dream realized within the family was also hers—because she had worked so hard to make each one possible.

Her nurturing spirit reached beyond her home. At her local senior center in Redmond, she built friendships, offered kindness, and created community with her warmth and humility.

María is survived by her beloved sisters, Edy and María Blanca, as well as the many nieces and nephews she helped raise, guide, and shape into the people they are today—each of whom loved her deeply and carry her lessons, her love, and her spirit forward.

She leaves behind a legacy of love, sacrifice, and unwavering leadership that will echo for generations. She was the heart of our family, the keeper of our stories, and the force that shaped our path. Her absence leaves a void that cannot be filled, but her spirit lives on in the lives she strengthened and the future she made possible.
